Set in the ruins of Tutbury Castle, an enduring reminder of the turbulent reign of the Stuart monarchs, watch a dramatic costumed performance by Dr Gareth Williams, curator at the British Museum. Performing as Charles II, Dr Williams will explore Charles’ struggle to reclaim his fathers’ throne after the Parliamentarian take over.
Charles was just 12 years old when the Civil War began and during his lifetime he went from heir to the throne to penniless exile to restored king. Newly on the throne, Charles had the tough task of learning how to govern post-Commonwealth Britain and to avoid the fatal mistakes of his father, Charles I. His reign saw many important changes in English society, and Charles II himself was known to contemporaries as ‘The Merrie Monarch’. His court was well known for its extravagance and Charles has been remembered for his numerous mistresses- including actress Nell Gwynne.
This event is suitable for 16+ only.
