Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned at Tutbury Castle four times, between February 1569 and December 1585. Mary’s letters reveal that Tutbury was a particularly hated prison, and it has attracted considerable attention in both historical and fictional accounts of Mary’s imprisonment. These accounts have often mixed together details from her different visits, as well as adding details which have no foundation in historical sources. This lecture by Dr Gareth Williams (Director of Research at Tutbury Castle) sorts the fact from the fiction, and also reassesses Mary’s relationship with her jailers, especially Sir Amyas Paulet, often condemned for his supposed cruelty to Mary.

If any of the Spring Lectures are affected by snow, we will arrange an alternative date.
