Tutbury Hoard Talk by Dr Gareth Williams

Hosted by Tutbury Church

Friday 21st June 2019

7pm – 10pm

Admission £10.50 per person

In 1831, workmen discovered a cache of medieval silver pennies in the bed of the River Dove, close to the bridge between Tutbury and Hatton. Over the next few days hundreds of people got involved in searching for what turned out to be the largest hoard of coins ever found in the British Isles. The dating and size of the hoard proves that this must be the same hoard lost by Thomas, earl of Lancaster in March 1322. Thomas had rebelled against his cousin, King Edward II, and used Tutbury Castle as his base before his decisive defeat in battle at Burton Bridge. This lecture by Dr Gareth Williams of the British Museum reconstructs what we know of the hoard today, and examines the circumstances that led to it being hidden or lost in the river. The lecture will take place in Tutbury Church, where the coins were last seen in 1322 before their disappearance.

Arrival at Tutbury church at 7pm and the talk will commence promptly at 7.30pm. There will be a chance to ask questions and tea/coffee and biscuits will be served after the talk.
