2020 sounds like a date from a science fiction film and if I remember one particular 1970’s film correctly we should all be walking around in tin foil dresses and white zip up suits for men carrying light guns on our hips. The only creature in the castle in tinfoil lately was the Turkey as two families stayed at the castle for Christmas and had a fantastic and memorable time with an appearance of a ghost of Christmas past I understand – or maybe it was the champagne that caused the vision.
We spent a great deal of time in the last three months of 2019 planning new ideas for 2020. All the staff are the same loyal and trusty band keen to offer ideas that our visitors can enjoy for the first time. So, talking of loyal and trusty bands – Robin Hood, his Merry Men and Maid Marion along with a fierce High Sherriff of Nottingham and soldiers to “boo” at will be played out at our Easter Bank Holiday celebrations. I am told that the great King Richard the Lionheart himself will make an appearance arriving on a horse. Now that is romance, with the story of Robin Hood locked into the nation’s hearts as a story told and retold over the centuries by the fire told again at Tutbury Castle in all its glory. We do have a claim on Robin Hood as the same Saga in various forms that tells the tale of Robin Hood also says that Robin and Maid Marion married at Tithbury (The old name of Tutbury) and that the Priest of Doveridge officiated. Doveridge is a few miles from the castle and the churchyard boasts a propped Yew tree which is over 2,000 years old. The forest that would have surrounded the castle at the time of King Richard, would have stretched all the way to Nottingham and the river Dove is at the foot of the castle ledge with green field and hills beyond. So, the view today is not a forest but instead glorious English countryside. Dust off your green tights and do dress up and enjoy the archery and hog roast and lots of fun for all the family. Tickets are available now on our website.
Talking of romance there has been a tremendous amount of interest in 2020 and some couples wanting 20.02.20 and a range of similar mathematical combinations.
