June’s Letter from the Curator (2017)

Dear Friends,

As I write we have Vikings standing in the office eating cheese sandwiches. That makes a change from Henry VIII who is often here too having a cup of coffee (I wonder if the real Henry VIII would have liked coffee as this one does).Life at this castle is both hilarious and fascinating. The school that is in with us today are simply lovely and the little ones so wide eyed but enjoying immensely the Viking and craft sessions.  Next week we have hundreds (yes I do mean hundreds) of school children with us listening to Tudor musicians or Elizabeth 1st, and the ever popular battle training.  We have some really talented people working for us at Tutbury most of whom have been with us for many years.  Then the schools will break up and grandparents and parents will be arriving for cream teas and picnics and the sun will shine . We will be opening six days a week as of the 6th July. In other words, every days except Mondays which we use for cleaning and tidying up the grounds.  The exception will be the great Fairytale Bank Holiday celebrations at the end of August, which is always beautiful and always sweet – we shall be open on the Monday that bank holiday weekend and close on the Tuesday .

The summer picnics and talk will start again soon. We are discussing the mechanics of perhaps changing the format slightly this year but not much as I am really flattered to say that lots of people are enquiring as so they are still really popular. This year I plan to offer Katherine Swynford, Duchess of Lancaster (scarlet woman – lovely!) and also the ever popular Nell Gwynne.  Yes, Sex and the Tudors is the one that is most enquired about and causes uproar every time I appear.

If you would like to see one of my characters do please send us an email saying which one and then that will show us which one we should put on as well as enabling us to contact you with dates when your choice is due to appear.

Finally ghost hunts here are great fun at any time of the year and we plenty in the summer – it is easier to see when you are running away !

Best wishes to all

Lesley Smith
