June’s Letter from the Curator (2018)

Dear Friends

With June, we officially welcome the summer season! If the weather in May is anything to go by then we should have a very sunny summer indeed!

May was a very exciting time for the castle, with two very different events for the bank holiday weekends. The castle was taken over by Normans for our Normannis event, celebrating the 950th anniversary of the castle, built originally as a motte and bailey castle as part of William the Conqueror’s quest to stamp his authority in the Midlands after the Battle of Hastings! Visitors were able to step back in time to 1068, with Norman re-enactors staging battles, with many other activities to try as well. Tutbury Castle then travelled back in time once more, this time to the 1940s, as part of the village’s 1940s celebrations. Despite the forecast of storms, we luckily experienced lovely weather, allowing visitors to explore the castle and learn about the 1940s from various knowledgeable re-enactor groups. However, this is not the end of the Bank Holiday events at Tutbury Castle for 2018. Preparations are underway for the Fairytale Weekend, which will run for three days during the August Bank Holiday, during which time the castle grounds will be full of princesses and pirates! Tickets are currently on sale through our website.

The month of June is named after the Roman goddess, Juno. This is very fitting, as at Tutbury Castle, the month of June sees many couples choosing our beautiful castle as a setting for their special day, and with our picturesque venue and breath-taking views, you can understand why! Our large marquee accommodates up to 120 guests or for the smaller parties we have the great hall (maximum of 35 guests). Whichever venue suits you, you can be sure that we have a photographer’s paradise for all your wedding pictures. We have a licence for civil ceremonies and also perform hand fast ceremonies. It is not only weddings that are hosted at our castle, we also take bookings for a range of events, such as birthday parties and school proms. If you are interested in holding an event at our stunning castle, do not hesitate to contact our friendly administration team, who will do all they can to make sure that your event is memorable!

Our Lazy Sunday events will be continuing into June, with a range of activities to suit everyone. Whether your hobby is gardening, arts and crafts or classic cars, you’ll be sure to find an activity that is your cup of tea! We have also got the pleasure of welcoming the Derby Philosophical Society on Sunday 10th June. This a modern society of local re-enactors and historians, who will be staging a Georgian picnic at our castle and giving talks on ‘Georgian Magic’, ‘The History of the Tent’ and ‘Early flight reconsidered’. Our team at the castle are very excited to be hosting this event for the first time. Therefore, we will be offering entrance for two for one on tickets on Sunday 10th June! Information about our Lazy Sunday Afternoon activities can be found on our website.

Therefore, as I sit in the tea room with a cup of tea and scone, I am eagerly awaiting the start of summer at Tutbury Castle. I so look forward to welcoming you all. We will be opening for six days a week from 3rd July, meaning we are open each day of the week except for Monday, which gives us a chance to tidy up the grounds, so that we can provide the best possible experience for our visitors. Let us hope that the warm weather that we have been experiencing continues into this month, so that everyone who visits the castle may experience its true beauty.

We are so looking forward to welcoming you…

Best wishes
Lesley Smith, curator.
