March’s Letter from the Curator (2017)

Dear Friends,

The is much excitement here at the castle as the build up is underway for the great Easter opening as a crowd of Vikings surge into the castle and going to thrill everyone – and scare a few too. As the real Vikings came in their dragon prowed ships up the river Trent and the Dove past the castle mound, it is quite a thought in the middle of all the fun that they really did come to this immediate area and raided a convent at nearby Hanbury before moving forward to Repton which was a major Viking site. If you would like to meet the Vikings do come and join us for our Easter Bank Holiday celebrations on 16th. and 17th. April. We do recommend you buy your tickets in advance for this event on 01283-812129.

Another reason for excitement is the start of our Swing dance classes at the castle starting 27th. February in our marquee between 8.00 and 9.00 pm with free parking. Tickets are only £5.00 and we are looking forward to welcoming you to join us for this fun event with great music. At the end of May we have our annual 1940’s Bank Holiday event and anyone attending the dance classes will just love joining in the fun with their new found Swing dancing skills.

The ever popular Photography Day is scheduled here between and 10.00 and 4.00 pm on 2nd. April with lots of models crossing various periods here to be photographed. Few photography clubs can afford models so this event is usually well attended. Tickets are available on 01283-812129.

A shared event with the Belper singers is to be held at St. Mary’s Priory Church on 8th. April .Such a great choir in the beautiful and evocative setting of the Norman Church of St. Mary which was built by the castle.

Our ghost hunts are selling out fast so although you will see all the dates on the website are sold out we shall be putting more dates up before the end of February.

Keep warm & Best wishes,
Lesley Smith
